Indawgyi’s first ever weather station

Indawgyi’s first ever weather station

The weather is determining our lives and no one is able to dodge it. Especially in recent history, the global influx in natural disasters foreshadowed the perceivable hazards which go along with climate change. Myanmar is exposed to these hazards as heavy floods, increases in high temperatures, or rainfall variability including record-breaking rainfall, have shown in the past decade. These tragedies are a global issue, and yet the reckless handling of the local environment has accelerated the vulnerability for natural disaster in Myanmar. Especially the deforestation of entire landscapes is a huge issue and directly relates to recent disasters. Therefore, it is important to better understand the weather, its dynamic, and trends in Indawgyi in order to promptly react and develop suitable solutions for the environment and local communities.

Our partnership with the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) [link] is already a driver for the regular and continuing monitoring of Indawgyi’s water quality, and is also taking on the weather, now. During their latest visit in January 2019, Ingo Henschel on behalf of our partner reserves and the BTU donated and installed Indawgyi Lake’s first ever weather station on the premises of the Indawgyi Wetland Education Centre. The digital weather station delivers live data to a receiver at our welcome desk and automatically safes information about temperature, humidity, rain fall, and wind. The installation ended with a little training session for our Education Centre staff, who now support the monitoring of the weather and analyse the impact of climate change in Indawgyi Lake.
