Indawgyi Lake is the undiscovered gem of Myanmar. Located off the beaten track only a few hundred international tourists visit Myanmar's largest lake every year. The lake, its wetlands and the surrounding ever green mountains are tempting for thrilling nature experiences. Charming villages and majestic religious monuments including famous Shwe Myitzu Pagoda allow fascinating insights into the cultural diversity of Indawgyi.

Indawgyi Lake’s unique ecosystem is rich in biodiversity and an important refuge for a large number of globally threatened birds, primates and other mammals. The local communities also depend on an intact environment as their traditional livelihoods rely on fishing and farming. Grounded in science with a strong focus on adaptable, pragmatic, effective, and innovative solutions, the local communities and government with the support of international partner cooperatively tackle the various emerging threats.

A Lady And Her Lake - Sustainable Shrimp Fishing

Fishing with small mesh nets, poison or electric devices kills young fish. Using traditional fishing methods and following regulations help to sustain fisheries and livelihoods, right now and for future generations. The employment of more sustainable practices is essential and initial achievements can already be recognised due to the widespread participation of the local communities.

Sweetness In The Air

Traditionally, Kachin families use slash and burn to grow rice that threatens the watershed forests of Indawgyi Lake. New farming methods, such as agroforestry or organic garlic farming, protect the Lake’s watershed, and simultaneously assure an income for the families. Increasingly, residents and households in the area are employing more sustainable practices.

Protecting the remaining primary forests and growing trees for timber or firewood are critical to maintain the habitats of Indawgyi Lake. Increasingly, residents and households around the lake are employing more sustainable practices to promote the area’s biodiversity.

A Kitchen For Life - Firewood-Saving Stoves

Cooking with firewood-saving stoves reduces the degradation of forests, reduces smoke in the air and reduces women’s workload – all improving the health of families. Increasingly, residents and households around the lake are employing more sustainable practices such as building and cooking with these special stoves, to reduce the pressure on the forest.

Words Of Wisdom - Caring for Each Other & for Animals

According to Buddhist belief, protecting animals in the wild and releasing them is meant to reduce suffering. Any fish released into Indawgyi Lake should be native to the lake as then the delicate balance between species and environment will not be disturbed. Increasingly, residents and households around the lake are employing more sustainable practices to protect the integrity of the lake.

Envinronmental Protection in Myanmar

A documentary by Germany’s international broadcaster DW (2015)

For years environmental protection in Myanmar fell under the jurisdiction of the military regime. Gradual democratic reform in the country has seen a change in strategy, and the goverment is allowing NGOs to come in and work with local populations to protect their enviroment. One example is Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest inland lakes in Southeast Asia and a key ecosystem in the region. The NGO Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is working with local communities to preserve the lake's natural beauty.
