Indawgyi Lake with its unique ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and majestic religious sights is naturally an attractive tourist destination. In 2013, ecotourism was jointly recognised as a suitable tool for livelihood development, and ever since community-based ecotourism is an important component of the comprehensive conservation strategy of Indawgyi Lake. The engagement and empowerment of local ecotourism groups such as Inn Chit Thu in Lonton village, is essential to maximise the local added value of tourism for the local communities, while minimising the environmental impact of all activities. Regular community meetings and tourism trainings allow all community members to actively participate in the development of responsible tourism in the Indawgyi Biosphere Reserve. Tourism profits are earmarked funds for community development and subsequently support conservation projects such as the implementation of waste management systems and environmental-friendly sanitation. The continuous development of thrilling nature adventures, various itineraries, and eco-friendly accommodation opportunities assure outstanding, memorable explorations and experiences across the Indawgyi Biosphere Reserve.
